VOLUNTEER WITH IWS

Become a volunteer and make an impact in the lives of newcomer women and their families!

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

  • IWS requires a minimum 3-month commitment for the period from September to June
  • Volunteer hours may be shorter during the summer months of July and August
  • As a volunteer, you will receive a  letter of volunteerism after at least 3 months or 30 hours of volunteer work
  • To become a volunteer, submit the Volunteer Application Form to [email protected]
  • Applicants will be contacted within 10 business days for an interview

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

TEACHER/INSTRUCTOR FOR EAL/ESL CLASSES
  • Lead or assist our Drop-in EAL (English as an Additional Language) Program
  • Requires preparation for the session, as well as instructing on day of session (Friday mornings from 10am-12pm)
TEACHER ASSISTANT FOR EAL/ESL CLASSES
  • Assist our Drop-in EAL (English as an Additional Language) Program
  • Required providing additional support and individualized attention during sessions (Friday mornings from 10am-12pm)
ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING
  • Meet one-on-one with clients to provide assistance with English or computer literacy skills development
  • Volunteers will meet with clients once per week for 1-1.5 hours
  • Currently all tutoring sessions must take place within our office hours (Mon-Fri, 9am 4:30pm)
CHILDMINDER
  • Childminding is offered for a variety of our programs to increase their accessibility to our clients
  • Volunteers will be responsible to provide active and safe supervision of the children in their care (ages 6 months +)
  • Lead age appropriate activities for children such as reading, games and crafts

GROUP SESSION FACILITATOR
  • Lead group learning and skills development sessions for our Drop-In Programs, namely ActiveGray: Beyond 55, Fit4Life and Just4Women
  • Volunteers will typically lead sessions under one of the following categories:
    • Fitness
    • Yoga
    • Arts & Crafts
    • Cooking/Baking
    • Sewing
    • Knitting
    • Theme-based Learning Workshops

SPECIAL EVENTS ASSISTANCE
  • Assist at special events with set up, clean up or other tasks as assigned
  • Work as community ambassadors, representing IWS at our booth at events such as Folk Fest
CHILDREN & YOUTH PROGRAM ASSISTANCE
  • Provide support to program staff for our Children & Youth programs as: chaperone, session facilitator, room support, food prep and kitchen aide
